Art Museums in Lisbon
The art museums in Lisbon split into three groups: old masters, modern art and contemporary art. The National Museum of Ancient Art is the big caveat, because it is closed for works and only reopens partly on 21 November 2026. This guide compares every art museum by what it holds, whether it is open, the day it closes and what an adult pays. It also covers the split between Monday and Tuesday closures, the Lisboa Card discounts and free entry rules that only apply to residents. Each museum links to its own page on Museums in Lisbon with full hours, transport and collection detail. The other museums in Lisbon are set side by side on the main page.

Shortlist by Taste
For old masters the address is the National Museum of Ancient Art, but it is closed. For a mixed collection spanning Egyptian, Islamic, European painting and Lalique jewellery, the Gulbenkian Museum is the one to pick. For modern and contemporary art you choose between MAAT, MAC/CCB and MACAM in Belém, plus the Chiado museum for Portuguese art from 1850. For decorative Portuguese tile art the National Tile Museum is the reference, but it too is closed for works.
If you only have one day, the Gulbenkian's €16 ($17.84) ticket includes the CAM modern collection in the Kengo Kuma building next door.
What Is Closed
The National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) closed on 29 September 2025 for a €8.5M works programme. It reopens partially on 21 November 2026 at 15:00, starting with the international decorative arts floor and the restored Capela das Albertas. The National Tile Museum closed on 1 November 2025 for €4.5M of works, and the museum operator says it should reopen early next year, with no official date published.
Until then an 'Open Azulejo' exhibition runs at Palácio da Calheta in Belém, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, at about €5 ($5.58) according to press reports.

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and CAM
One complex in Avenidas Novas holds two art museums with very different collections and one shared ticket logic.
The Founder's Collection
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum holds the collection of its founder: Egyptian, Greek, Islamic, Armenian, Far Eastern and European art under one roof. The star pieces are the René Lalique jewellery, above all the Orchid diadem and the Dragonfly, Rembrandt's 'Portrait of an Old Man', Monet and Renoir paintings and Houdon's Diana. The museum reopened on 18 July 2026 after more than a year of works that added a new numismatics room.
It opens 10:00-18:00, Saturdays to 21:00, and closes Tuesdays plus 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 24 and 25 December. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Sunday afternoons are free for everybody from 14:00, as is Saturday evening 18:00-21:00 for under 30s with a Cartão Gulbenkian. Metro stops are São Sebastião on the blue and red lines or Praça de Espanha on the blue line, and buses 716, 726, 756, 746, 713 and 742 pass by. Full detail on the Gulbenkian Museum page.
CAM, the Modern Collection
CAM, the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, covers Portuguese and international art from the 20th century on. The named stars are Almada Negreiros, Paula Rego and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. The building by Kengo Kuma opened in 2024 and sits in the same garden complex as the Founder's Collection.
Hours match the main museum, 10:00-18:00 with Saturdays to 21:00, closed Tuesday. The museum ticket at €16 ($17.84) includes the CAM collection free. CAM alone costs €10 ($11.15) and CAM temporary exhibitions only €6 ($6.69), with the All Inclusive ticket at €18 ($20.07) covering everything including temporary shows. Under 18s enter free and Sundays from 14:00 are free at both buildings.

National Museum of Ancient Art (Closed for Works)
Lisbon's old masters museum is shut for a major renovation and only comes back in stages.
What It Holds
The National Museum of Ancient Art holds old masters. Its named works are the Panels of St Vincent by Nuno Gonçalves, Bosch's 'Temptations of St Anthony', Dürer's 'St Jerome', the Belém Monstrance and the Japanese Namban screens. It stands in the Santos district on Rua das Janelas Verdes.
Closure and Partial Reopening
The museum closed on 29 September 2025 for works funded with €8.5M under the PRR programme. The partial reopening is set for 21 November 2026 from 15:00, a Saturday, starting with the international decorative arts floor and the restored Capela das Albertas. Entry is free from 21 November to 1 December inclusive, then the normal tariff returns. That tariff is not confirmed for after the reopening.
The painting galleries are not confirmed for the partial reopening, so do not build a day around the star works. Fill the old masters gap with the Gulbenkian's European paintings. Details and updates on the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) page.

Contemporary Art in Belém: MAAT, MAC/CCB and MACAM
Belém holds three contemporary art museums: MAAT, MAC/CCB and MACAM.
MAAT
MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, works across two buildings. One is Amanda Levete's elliptical riverside building, the other the old Tejo Power Station from 1908. Exhibitions move between contemporary art, architecture and technology. It sits on Av. Brasília by the Tagus, reached by tram 15, CP Belém station or bus 728.
Hours are 10:00-19:00 Wednesday to Monday, closed Tuesday, with 24 and 31 December closing at 15:00. The tourist price is €16 ($17.84), residents in Portugal pay €12 ($13.38). The first Sunday of the month 10:00-13:00 is free, but only for residents in Portugal. One €16 ($17.84) ticket covers both buildings. See the MAAT page.
MAC/CCB
MAC/CCB, the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Centro Cultural de Belém, took over from the Berardo Collection museum in 2023, and the Berardo Collection is listed among its holdings. The collections shown are the State Contemporary Art Collection, Teixeira de Freitas, Ellipse and Berardo, covering modern and contemporary art from the 1970s on. A new wing, the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento, is named in the CABE ticket, with no opening date published.
It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:30, last admission 18:00, closed Monday. The ticket is €15 ($16.73) for all contemporary art and architecture exhibitions. Residents in Portugal pay half on showing ID, and every Sunday until 14:00 is free for residents. The MAC/CCB page has the detail.
MACAM
MACAM, the Armando Martins Contemporary Art Museum, is a new museum set in the Palácio dos Condes da Ribeira Grande on Rua da Junqueira, with a chapel exhibition space called àCapela. It shows the collection of collector Armando Martins. It opens 10:00-19:00, closes Tuesday, with reduced hours 10:00-14:00 on 24 and 31 December. Last admission 18:30.
The all-exhibitions ticket is €15 ($16.73), the permanent collection alone €8 ($8.92), each temporary show €6 ($6.69) or a pack of temporaries €10 ($11.15). The first Monday of each month 10:00-14:00 is free.
The CABE Combined Ticket
CABE is the combined ticket for these sites. One online ticket covers MAAT, MAC/CCB, the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento and MACAM at 20% off, and stays valid for 90 days.

Smaller Art Museums Worth Your Time
Beyond the big names, three smaller art museums fill themed gaps in the city.
Chiado, the National Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado covers Portuguese art from 1850, with Columbano, Amadeo and Almada among the names, and its permanent show 'Impressões Digitais. MNAC Collection' runs to 30 December 2026. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00, last admission 17:30, closed Monday.
Adult entry is €10 ($11.15), and the Lisboa Card makes it free. Under 12s enter free. A renovation is planned within the next three years by the national museum operator.
It sits on Rua Serpa Pinto in Chiado.
Museu do Oriente
The Museu do Oriente in Alcântara holds the Portuguese presence in Asia, with sections on Macau, Goa and the Japanese namban screens, plus the Asian Gods collection and the Kwok On puppets and masks. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00, Fridays to 20:00, and entry is €10 ($11.15). Friday evenings 18:00-20:00 are free for everyone.
Museu Medeiros e Almeida
The Museu Medeiros e Almeida is on the Lisboa Card discount list at 40% off. Check the museum's own site for its prices and hours before you go.
Source: Chiado hours and tickets, Museu do Oriente, Lisboa Card discounts.
Pick by Day of the Week
The closure split decides your itinerary more than anything else in Lisbon's art scene.
Mondays and Tuesdays
Tuesday is the closed day for the Gulbenkian, CAM, MAAT and MACAM. Monday is the closed day for MAC/CCB, the Chiado museum and Museu do Oriente, and Monday is also the expected closure day for the MNAA when it reopens. So a Monday works around the Gulbenkian, MAAT and MACAM, all open. A Tuesday works around MAC/CCB, Chiado and Museu do Oriente.
No art museum on this page closes Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Saturday is the long day at the Gulbenkian and CAM, open to 21:00.
Free Days, and Who Qualifies
Only one free rule on this page applies to every visitor: the Gulbenkian is free for everybody on Sundays from 14:00, and Museu do Oriente is free for everyone Friday 18:00-20:00. MAC/CCB lets residents in Portugal in free every Sunday until 14:00, MAAT's first Sunday 10:00-13:00 is residents only, and MACAM's first Monday morning is open to all on the museum's own site. The national 'Acesso 52' rule gives Portuguese citizens and residents 52 free days a year at national museums such as Chiado, but tourists do not qualify.
The Free Museums in Lisbon page lists every free option.

Art Museum Day Trips and Tickets
One art trip leaves the city, and three of these museums have tickets listed on this page.
Paula Rego in Cascais
The Casa das Histórias, the museum dedicated to Paula Rego, sits in Cascais, about 40 minutes from Lisbon by train. Prices and hours for the Casa das Histórias are not stated in this guide, so check the museum's own site before travelling.
Tickets Sold Here
Three art museums have entry tickets listed on this site. The MAC/CCB entry ticket costs €15 ($16.73), covers all exhibitions and stays valid 2 days, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The MAAT ticket costs €16 ($17.84), covers both the Gallery and MAAT Central, is valid 1 day and allows free cancellation up to 3 days before.
The Museu do Oriente ticket covers all exhibitions for €10 ($11.15), valid 1 day. For several museums in one trip, compare these against the Lisboa Card, which gives 15% to 20% off at MAAT, MAC/CCB and Museu do Oriente.

Tips for Art Museums in Lisbon
Do
- Do check the closure day before you set out, because the Belém museums split between Monday closures at MAC/CCB and Tuesday closures at MAAT and MACAM.
- Do buy the Gulbenkian museum ticket at €16 ($17.84) rather than the CAM ticket, because it includes the CAM collection free.
- Do turn up at the Gulbenkian on Sunday from 14:00 or Museu do Oriente on Friday from 18:00, because entry is free for everyone in those windows.
- Do consider the CABE combined ticket if you plan several Belém museums, because one online ticket covers MAAT, MAC/CCB, Pavilhão Julião Sarmento and MACAM at 20% off, valid 90 days.
- Do book a time slot in advance with the Lisboa Card at Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery if you combine art with monuments, because the card alone does not grant entry there.
Don't
- Don't build a day around the National Museum of Ancient Art before 21 November 2026, because it only reopens partially that afternoon and the star paintings are not confirmed as on view.
- Don't assume a Sunday is free everywhere, because the resident free rules at MAAT and MAC/CCB require Portuguese residency, not just a ticket office visit.
- Don't count on a Tuesday visit to MAAT or the Gulbenkian, because both close Tuesdays along with CAM and MACAM.
- Don't arrive at MAAT expecting the ticket office to run to 19:00 on a busy day, because it may close before the stated 19:00 closing time.
